STORYLINE:

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) held a memorial ceremony today (2 Nov) in honor of two peacekeepers who lost their lives as a result of an attack last week.

Two peacekeepers from Burkina Faso were killed during an attack perpetrated on 27 October against the camp of MINUSMA in Ber, in the Timbuktu region. Several other Burkinabe peacekeepers were also injured during the attack. The same day some other peacekeepers from Togo were injured in another attack against MINUSMA in Konna, in the Mopti region.
In addition one Guinean peacekeeper who died of sickness in Kidal was also honored.

Before being flown to Burkina Faso and Guinea, three coffins draped in UN flags were displayed at the MINUSMA Operational Base in the Malian capital Bamako.

The MINUSMA Force Commander, Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre, presided over the ceremony in the presence of representatives from the Malian Army.

Gillensporre paid tribute to the three soldiers who served under the UN flag and made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of peace. Addressing the mourners, he said, “today is a day of great sorrow. But as MINUSMA Force Commander, I thank them (fallen peacekeepers) for their motivation and strength, that reminds us of our mission to protect the Malian population.”
He also sent condolences to the families and saluted the courage of the peacekeepers inured in the attack and wished them a speedy recovery.
Following a minute of silence in memory of the fallen the Force Commander laid wreaths on the caskets of the fallen blue helmets and awarded posthumously UN medals to fallen peacekeepers, He also saluted the courage of the peacekeepers inured in the attack and wished them a speedy recovery.

MINUSMA was established to quell the violence and instability in the wake of a 2012 military overthrow of the government in Bamako and subsequent takeover of the country's vast northern region by rebels.
