"In the next six months, I have a very clear and precise objective related to the new MINUSMA mandate. The Security Council has sent an urgent message with the renewal of the new mandate, therefore the next six months will require substantial and concrete progress in the implementation of the peace agreement. Together and in close coordination, we will work to achieve objectives set in the mission's new mandate.”

STORYLINE:

In a ceremony held in capital Bamako, Mali, attended by high-level dignitaries and the Head of MINUSMA Mahamat Saleh Annadif, Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre assumed charge as Force Commander of MINUSMA from Major General Jean-Paul Deconinck ofBelgium.

Major General Deconinck reviewed a MINUSMA Honour Guard for the last time and later he handed over the UN Flag to Lieutenant General Gyllensporre.

In his farewell speech to mark the end of his 18 months term, Major General Deconinck especially thanked the Government of Mali, the Malian Armed Forces as well as religious, civil and community leaders and the communities themselves in helping to further peace.

He said “already at that time mi intention was to involve all national and international actors involved in security, of Mali, and to work and closely cooperate with all of them. We all succeeded in doing so, together all the partners, FAMA and security forces beside with Barkhane, G5 Sahel and EUTM. On assuming charge as Force Commander of MINUSMA, Lieutenant General Gyllensporre said: "In the next six months, I have a very clear and precise objective related to the new MINUSMA mandate. Lieutenant General Gyllesnporre will command a force of 13,000 peacekeepers drawn from 56 different countries.
