STORYLINE:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres today (05 Sep) swore in Michele Bachelet as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The General Assembly had voted to appoint the former two-time President of Chile to the post on 10 August. Bachelet is the seventh High Commissioner since the office was created in 1993. She replaces Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, who took on the role in September 2014

Guterres also swore in the new UN Ombudswoman Shireen Lillian Dodson. Earlier today, UN spokesperson Stephan Dujarric said the two swearings-in improve the gender parity in the Secretary-General’s senior management group.
