“As an astronaut, it was an unforgettable experience to fly into space. When I looked at Earth from afar - the cradle of human race and our home for ten thousand years - no word can describe the beauty of it. It made me feel that we should appreciate life more, and protect the beautiful planet that we call home.”

STORYLINE:

The first Taikonaut of China Yangli Wei said today that his country is “committed to advocate for international cooperation in space technology to provide more benefit for humankind.”

At a side event of the UNISPACE+50 Symposium in Vienna, the former Chinese astronaut and now head of China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) Liwei Yang said, “in developing human spaceflight technology for better benefiting humankind, China believes in peaceful use of space resources," adding that “international cooperation in aerospace is a global developing trend now.”

In 2003, Yang became the first person sent into space by the Chinese space programme. His mission, Shenzhou 5, made China the third country to independently send humans into space.

On his mission, Yang brought a United Nations flag and a Chinese flag on board, and presented them to the world.

He said “this is to show that through all our efforts, we can better benefit humankind.”

On the initiative that China is working with the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Yang said “it aims to better showcase international cooperation in space technology and better keep the momentum of One Belt One Road, which echoes President Xi’s vision of building a community of shared future for humankind.”

On space technology for sustainable development, the former astronaut said the development of space technology “impacts us in ways we cannot imaginable; ten years ago, 20 years ago, or even 30 years old, we could not have foreseen how much space technology would progress. The development of space technology plays a crucial role in social development and achieving our common goals.”

Recalling his mission and looking ahead, Yang said “as an astronaut, it was an unforgettable experience to fly into space. When I looked at Earth from afar - the cradle of human race and our home for ten thousand years - no word can describe the beauty of it. When I gazed at the endless space from inside of the spacecraft, and looked back at myself, I was deeply proud of our humanity, and I also realized that we are insignificant as individuals.”

He said, “We should appreciate life more, and protect the beautiful planet that we call home.”

At the side event "China's Space Cooperation: Towards a Shared Future and Benefits for All", Yang's country donated models of China Space Station and BEIDOU-3 Satellite to UNOOSA. They will be on permanent exhibit at the Vienna International Centre.

In 2016, UNOOSA and CMSA signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to develop the space capabilities of United Nations Member States via opportunities on-board the CSS, which is expected to be operational from 2022. The Announcement of Opportunity for this initiative, as well as application instructions, were released at a ceremony hosted by UNOOSA and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna on 28 May.

The UNOOSA-CMSA initiative aims to promote international cooperation in human space flight and activities related to space exploration; provide flight experiment and space application opportunities on-board the CSS for United Nations Member States; promote capacity-building activities by making use of human space flight technologies, including facilities and resources from China's human spaceflight programme; and promote increased awareness among United Nations Member States of the benefits of utilizing human space technology and its applications.
