Description
"A WORLD FIT FOR CHILDREN?"

One of the main goals of the World Surnmit for Children held in 1990 was to reduce the rates of infant mortality by one-third between 1990 and 2000. The overall reduction actually achieved -14 percent - was a significant improvement, as 3 million more children a year now survive beyond their fifth birthday than was the case a decade ago. More than 60 countries actually achieved the target of a one-third reduction, including most countries in the European Union and North Africa, and many others in East Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and the Middle East. Last May the United Nations General Assembly held a Special Session on Children to review progress since 1990 and examine the problems facing children everywhere in the future. In this edition of World Chronicle, Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF, the United Nations Children Fund, talks about the need to create a world that is fit for both infants and adolescents.
