Description
INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR RWANDA

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda has been breaking new ground in the international judicial system. It rendered the first-ever judgments for the crime of genocide. It was the first-ever international tribunal to convict an individual for rape as a crime against humanity and to rule that rape can be a crime of genocide. The Tribunal was the first such institution to convict a national leader (former Rwandan Prime Minister jean Kambanda) of genocide. In this edition of World Chronicle, Adama Dieng, the Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, looks at the achievements of the Tribunal and what remains to be done in order to bring to justice the perpetrators of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994.
