SMALL ARMS TRADE
Small Arms - generally considered to be those that can be carried and fired by one person - are responsible for 300,000 to 500,000 deaths a year. To deal with such a major worldwide issue, the United Nations is sponsoring an International Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in all its Aspects, to take place in July at the United Nations Headquarters in July 2001. In this edition of World Chronicle, Ambassador Carlos dos Santos, who is the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Small Arms Conference, discusses some of the issues to be addressed in this ground-breaking conference.
