2. Wide shot, press room
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:
“We accepted the partition of Palestine. It was a painful concession that we made. We accepted Israel on 78 percent of our land, of historical Palestine. Now Israel wants to take over all of historical Palestine, and that is how the two-state solution is being destroyed.”
4. Wide shot, journalists
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:
“This is not only entirely untrue, but it is misleading and it is a way of avoiding dealing with the truth. And this total disregard for human rights; for human suffering; this total acquiescence to a continued bloodbath in Palestine, and to continued impunity for Israel, and to continued lawlessness and criminality; this cover for Israel has led the Palestinians to think that Israel has two representatives in the UN, not just one. And one of them even more adamant than the other.”
6. Wide shot, Ashrawi listening to question
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:
“I think that these moves are sending a clear message that reconciliation is not a luxury, it is an imperative and it is not a political game. This is something that has to do with the lives of the people. This is a question of survival. This is a question of facing the tremendous challenges that all Palestinians face, whether is Gaza or Jerusalem or in the West Bank, or even in exile; even many of them within Israel proper.”
8. Med shot, journalists
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:
“I’ve personally, all my life I have participated in non-violent protests. It doesn’t mean I was spared the violence; no. I was subjected to Israeli military violence repeatedly. I was personally beaten up. Anyway, it is not my personal story, but this is something that no Palestinian is exempt from. Even though we try to remain non-violent. And when a single Palestinian lashes out, of course the label terrorist comes out as though living under occupation doesn’t give you the right to resist; but that should you resist the occupation then the occupation has the right to defend itself against its own victims.”
10. Med shot, journalist asking question
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:
“I mean if you want Israel to defend its boundaries, I would like you to have Israel define boundaries. The moment it does that, it means the 67 lines; it means Palestine has its own boundaries; it means that Jerusalem is occupied territory. But because it doesn’t want to acknowledge the concept of limits, whether territorial limits or limits to moral behaviour or limits to violence; it can get away with it. But it is time that Israel is held to limits in all aspects including territorial limits.”

STORYLINE:

A senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said Palestinians recognized Israel on 78 percent of their land but now “Israel wants to take over all of historical Palestine, and that is how the two-state solution is being destroyed.”

Speaking to reporters in New York today (16 May), PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi said the United States was violating international law by moving its embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing the occupied city as part of Israel.

She stressed that the protests in Gaza were a grassroot movement in which protesters demanded their right to return as recognized by international law, the lifting of the siege on Gaza, and to protest the American move with regards to Jerusalem. Ashrawi said claims by US ambassador Haley that the protests in Gaza were being organized by Hamas are “entirely untrue” and a way to avoiding “dealing with the truth.” She added, “This total disregard for human rights; for human suffering; this total acquiescence to a continued bloodbath in Palestine” has led Palestinians to believe that Israel has “two representatives in the UN, not just one, and one of them even more adamant than the other.”

Ashrawi emphasized that the protests in Gaza were peaceful and done on Palestinian land. She said protesters burned tires to create a smoke screen and avoid sniper fire. She stressed the protests did not give Israel the right to shoot and kill unarmed protesters as they posed no threat to the Israeli military even if they did breach the fence.

SOUNDBITE (English) Hanan Ashrawi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and of the Palestinian Legislative Council:

I was personally beaten up. Anyway, it is not my personal story, but this is something that no Palestinian is exempt from. Even though we try to remain non-violent. And when a single Palestinian lashes out, of course the label terrorist comes out as though living under occupation doesn’t give you the right to resist; but that should you resist the occupation then the occupation has the right to defend itself against its own victims.”

Responding to a question on the right of Israeli troops to protect their border, the PLO official said, “I would like you to have Israel define boundaries.” She said Israel was the only country in the world without a border and consistently expands into Palestinian territory. She said the moment Israel recognizes its boundaries, “it means the 67 lines; it means Palestine has its own boundaries; it means that Jerusalem is occupied territory. But because it doesn’t want to acknowledge the concept of limits, whether territorial limits or limits to moral behaviour or limits to violence; it can get away with it. But it is time that Israel is held to limits in all aspects including territorial limits.”

The PLO official said ordinary Palestinians were moving towards reconciliation among factions on the ground before their leadership, which was harming some Palestinian leaders’ credibility. She said these moves were sending “a clear message that reconciliation is not a luxury, it is an imperative and it is not a political game” adding that it was also a question of “survival.”
