RESULTS OF BEIJING +5 WOMEN'S CONFERENCE
In 1995, the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China, succeeded in bringing about a new international commitment to the goal of advancement of women's rights. The Beijing declaration and the Platform for Action, adopted unanimously by representatives from 189 States, constituted a powerful agenda for women's empowerment. This June, the United Nations General Assembly held a special session called "Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-First Century", also known as Beijing +5. The session focussed on examples of good practices, positive actions, lessons learned, and the obstacles and key challenges remaining. In this edition of World Chronicle, Angela King, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, talks about Beijing +5 and the struggle for women's rights worldwide.
