WOMEN'S RIGHTS

Women and girls still comprise the majority of the world's 1.3 billion absolute poor, while women's participation in government jobs that would enable them to shape relevant policies has continued to hover at around 13 percent globally. Discussions continue worldwide on how to implement the Beijing Platform for Action, established as a direct result of the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. Now, five years later, the international spotlight will be on women once more at UN Headquarters in New York in June 2000 as the world reviews the achievements and the failures of five years since Beijing Conference. In this edition of World Chronicle, Yakin Ertürk, Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, looks back at what progress has been made in the five years since.
