Description
"The UN in Bosnia: Mission Accomplished?”

From 1992 to 1995, Bosnia and Herzegovina was the site of a terrible war – a conflict waged largely against civilians that left 230,000 people dead and half the population of 4 million displaced. Now, the United Nations is leaving Bosnia, having completed the largest police reform and restructuring operation in its history. Is Bosnia, which now boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Europe, a ‘mission accomplished’ for the UN? Will the alphabet-soup of remaining international bodies (NATO-SFOR, OSCE, EU, etc.) be able to bring lasting stability to this troubled nation? Can the ethnic hatreds that fueled the war be overcome to give Bosnia a European future? Are its police ready now to handle organized transnational crime?
In this edition of World Chronicle, these issues are explored with the help of Jacques Paul Klein, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
