“I condemn the persistent attacks by the various armed groups and militia across the DRC, the recruitment of children, the rape of women and young girls, the burning of houses and schools, and the desecration of places of worship. It is the responsibility of those that direct and those who perpetrate these attacks to ensure that this unacceptable violence comes to an end. And it is our collective responsibility to ensure that those that direct and perpetrate these crimes be held fully responsible for their actions.”

STORYLINE:

The Special Representative of the Secretary=General for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) told the Security Council today (7 Mar) that “while national political attention remains centred on the confidence-building measures and progress in the electoral process, the security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has continued to deteriorate.”

Leila Zerrougui, who is also the Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) said this situation “brings increased risks for renewed instability in many parts of the country, and poses serious threats to the civilian population.”

Zerrougui said the East of the country is the area worst affected. She said, “the activities of the ADF in the Beni area, and of the Mayi-Mayi groups in North and South Kivu continue tom pose significant threats to the civilian population, and these groups maintain the ability to conduct attacks against the FARDC and MONUSCO.”

The UN official condemned “the persistent attacks by the various armed groups and militia across the DRC, the recruitment of children, the rape of women and young girls, the burning of houses and schools, and the desecration of places of worship.”

She stressed that it was “the responsibility of those that direct and those who perpetrate these attacks to ensure that this unacceptable violence comes to an end. And it is our collective responsibility to ensure that those that direct and perpetrate these crimes be held fully responsible for their actions.”

The much delayed national elections are expected to take place in December 2018.
