The Members of the UN Security Council today (21 Feb) paid tribute to their late colleague Vitaly Churkin of Russia with a minute of silence and passing remarks describing him as “a diplomatic giant” and “a fierce negotiator”.

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations died suddenly Monday in New York, one day before turning sixty five.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “his passing represents a deep loss for all of us in the United Nations, including in this Council, where his distinctive voice was ever-present for the past decade, and where I think we will all miss that voice in the sessions to come.”

Chinese ambassador Jieyi Liu said Churkin “was a good friend of many of us present here. He was sincere and kind. Though he had unfortunately passed away, his memory will always stay with us.”

Nikki Haley, Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN said “Vitaly’s passing is a shock to all of us and a great loss.”

British ambassador Matthew Rycoft described the late colleague as a “diplomatic giant, a maestro of the Security Council” adding “I will always remember the lessons that I learned from Vitaly.”

Ambassador Francois Delattre of France said ““Vitaly Churkin was a more than an exceptional diplomat, more than a fierce negotiator; he was a master of diplomacy.”

The Permanent Representative of Japan, Koiro Bessho remembered his Russian colleague as “a certainly a great, true, outstanding diplomat [who] worked hard for his country, but at the same time we all loved him for his humor and his willingness to try to resolve the issues.”

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was appointed to his post in New York in 2006 after serving as ambassador to Belgium and Canada, and as a liaison ambassador to NATO and the Western European Union.

Churkin reportedly fell ill in his office at the Russian mission to the UN and was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he later died.
