STORYLINE:

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations died suddenly today (20 Feb) in New York, one day before turning sixty five.

At the news of the passing of ambassador Churkin, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations Lana Nusseibeh interrupted a meeting of a working group of the UN General Assembly she was co-chairing, to say “I would like to offer on behalf of all of us our deepest condolences to the country, to the government of Russia, to the Russian mission here at the UN and most of all to the wife and two children of ambassador Vitaly Churkin.”

Nusseibeh also said “he was a dear colleague of all of us, a deeply committed diplomat to his country and one of the finest people we have known.”

Churkin reportedly fell ill this morning in his office at the Russian mission to the UN and was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he died.

Ambassador Churkin was appointed to his post in New York in 2006 after serving as ambassador to Belgium and Canada, and as a liaison ambassador to NATO and the Western European Union.
