STORYLINE:

Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country was committed to multilateral diplomacy and emphasized that the world needed a “win-win” development vision whose gains could be shared by all.

Speaking at a high level meeting in Geneva today (18 Jan), Xi emphasised China’s commitment to peace adding that “no conflict is too big to settle and no ice is too thick to break.” He called for increased cooperation between countries while respecting each other’s differences and sovereignty. He stressed that the essence of sovereign equality was that the sovereignty and the dignity of all countries, “whether big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, must be respected.”

The Chinese President said all countries had “the right to independently choose their social systems and development paths” and should not be subject to interference in their internal affairs. He added that “major powers should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, exercise restraint in addressing problems that arise and managing their differences, and build a new model of relations, characterized by a lack of conflict and confrontation, with mutual respect and win-win cooperation.”

Xi said nuclear weapons were "the sword of Damocles that hangs over mankind" and should be completely prohibited and thoroughly destroyed over time.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described China as a central pillar which has remained committed to its role within the international community. Guterres said China had played a key role in the run-up to signing the Paris Climate Agreement, and in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals. He said China’s commitment to multilateralism was “more necessary than ever" adding that only a global approach can solve global problems.
