STORYLINE:

The United Nations Security Council called on the outgoing president Jammeh “to respect the choice of the sovereign people of The Gambia and to transfer, without condition and undue delay, power to the President-elect, Mr. Adama Barrow.”

Speaking today (12 Dec) to reporters in New York, the president of the Security Council for the month of December, Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain, Juan Manual Gonzalez de Linares Palou said “the Members of the Security Council reiterated their call to all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from violence. They further expressed their commitment to continue to follow closely the evolution of the situation in the Gambia in the framework of the conflict prevention role of the Security Council.”

Asked if the Security Council will take any tougher measures, the president of the Security Council said “no, the Security Council didn’t discuss about any measures including the use of force. No, not at all.”

A high-level delegation from the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU) and the Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will visit Gambia’s capital Banjul on Tuesday (13 Dec).

He added “in this moment, I think our maximum priority is to support the high-level visit that is going to take place tomorrow in Banjul and they are going to transmit a direct message personally to the outgoing president.”

The Islamic Republic of The Gambia held presidential elections on 1 December 2016. Initially, President Jammeh, who ruled the country for 22 years, conceded defeat to president-elect Adama Barrow, but last week Jammeh rejected his electoral defeat and called for another vote.
