STORYLINE:

The United Nations said that Maria Sharapova will be reinstated next April as goodwill ambassador with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) when her suspension ends for using prohibited drugs.

She was banned from the sport for two years, but last month her suspension was reduced to 15 months.

In a statement, the agency said that it was “glad to learn that Maria Sharapova can return to the sport she loves sooner than expected and we will lift the suspension of her role as our Goodwill Ambassador once the reduced ban expires in April 2017.

We understand that Ms. Sharapova will be focused on resuming her tennis career and we look forward to discussing her role and engagement with UNDP at an appropriate date.”

The tennis star was appointed UNDP’s goodwill ambassador in February 2007, but suspended her in March this year after she admitted to doping.
