STORYLINE:

The United Nations (UN) said today (18 Aug) its mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) carried out an extraction operation on “humanitarian grounds” to move former South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar from one location to another within the country.

Speaking to the press in New York, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said the operation was carried out yesterday based on a request from the DRC authorities and that MONUSCO had since handed him over to them. Haq confirmed that the operation took place in an area near the border with South Sudan but said he was “not in a position to confirm his location.” He said the extraction included Machar, his wife and ten others and was carried out with the support of the DRC authorities.

Haq said the mission provided Machar with “whatever medical assistance he needs” but could not confirm if he was injured.
