STORYLINE:

Candidate for the job of the United Nations Secretary-General, Srgjan Kerim said today “the Secretary-General has to make sure that his crew is fit, that he is fit and that they can do their part of the job within the division of labor which has been set up by the Charter.”

Srgjan Kerim, one of nine contenders for the top UN job, is a former Foreign Minister in the government of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia who also served as a President of the 62nd UN General Assembly.

In an effort to make the process of electing the next top UN official more transparent, the UN General Assembly holds informal dialogues with candidates for the next United Nations Secretary-General, providing an opportunity to all Members States as well as civil society for substantive and open engagement with the candidates.

Kerim said his agenda, if elected, “derives from the priorities of this organization and of what member states have set up”, namely management reform, sustainable development, climate change and financing development as top priorities, followed by “security architecture, human rights and citizen participation, gender equality and the education, migration.”

Former President of the 62nd UN General Assembly said “appropriate tools” to achieve those goals “are definitely mediation, promotion of multilateralism and partnerships.”

Asked by a delegate what he would do to counter incidents of corruption and abuse within the UN, Kerim said that, if he’s elected for the job, “the office of the Secretary-General will have a task force for internal control. And this task force for internal control will report directly to the Deputy Secretary-General and to the Secretary-General in terms of following all these processes, including preventive measures to diminish the risk of having this kind of abuse.”

As part of the informal dialogues, each candidate has a televised and webcast two-hour timeslot, starting with a short oral presentation. Representatives from Member States will then ask questions, followed by the President of the General Assembly, who will ask a few of the more than 1,000 questions submitted by the general public on social media under the hashtag #UNSGcandidates.
