STORYLINE:

On the last leg of his tour of West and North Africa, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met today in the Algerian capital Algiers withPresident Bouteflika whom he congratulated "on Algeria's active contribution to the peace and stability of the region."

Prior to his visit to Algeria, UN Secretary-General visited several countries of Sahara and Sahel regions of Africa primarily in a bid to bring world's attention to the suffering of Sahrawi refugees from Western Sahara but also to address the security and humanitarian situation in the region.

After meeting with the Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Ban told reporters "we talked about regional and international issues, especially Mali and Libya" as well as the war against terrorism. He underlined to President Buteflika "the importance of strictly respecting human rights."

Earlier today, the UN top official also met with Algeria's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra whom he conveyed his recognition of the role of Algeria in organizing negotiations between Libyan warring parties.

After the meeting, Ban told reporters that in Libya, " if there is no progress on the political plan, the humanitarian situation will worsen and that will pose a security threat,.The ISIL will also increase its attacks and gain territory."

The Secretary-General also addressed the plight of Sahrawi refugees in Algeria. He said "The world cannot continue to neglect Sahrawies. During his visit to Algeria's capital, Ban laid a wreath at the Monument to the Algerian Martyrs of Independence War and panted an love tree together with the Minister Lamamra on the grounds of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
