STORYLINE:

The United Nations General Assembly adopted today (19 Nov) a resolution urging Member States to make available all information they may have in their possession, related to the circumstances and conditions of the crash that killed Dag Hammarskjold while he was serving as UN chief more than 50 years ago.

“May I take it that the Assembly decides to adopt draft resolution A/70/L.9, it’s so decided,” General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft told Member States representatives.

On 29 December 2014, the General Assembly, requested the UN Secretary-General to appoint an independent panel of experts to examine and assess the probative value of new information related to the death, in September 1961, of Hammarskjold and the members of the party accompanying him.

Hammarskjold served from April 1953 until his death at the age of 56 in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, along with 15 others more.

The Secretary-General appointed Mohamed Chande Othman, Kerryn Macaulay and Henrik Larsen to lead the investigation, and their final report was formally presented to the Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, in June 2015

Olof Skoog, Special Representative of Sweden to the UN, hailed the report’s findings and said that he agreed with the Secretary-General “that this may be the last chance to find the truth, and that it is our shared responsibility to pursue the full truth concerning the faithful plane crash in Ndola 54 years ago.”

He also said that “the contrast between what we know about Hammarskjold life and legacy and even his inner thoughts on the one hand, and what we still do not know about the circumstances surrounding his death remains troubling.”
