Africa Industrialization Day 2011
In 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on celebrating Africa Industrialization Day. It is celebrated each year, around 20 November. UNIDO , as the specialized agency of the UN for promoting industrial development for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, takes the lead in commemorating Africa Industrialization by raise awareness on the role industrialization plays in African development and galvanizes international support from stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, and civil society.
In view of the UN Secretary-General’s recently launched global initiative on Sustainable Energy for All by 2030, UNIDO will organize an interactive panel on the theme of "Sustainable Energy for Accelerated Industrial Development in Africa".
Statements will be made on behalf of the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary-General and by representatives of the African Union and the African Group. The panel also features a keynote address by Princeton Professor Winston Soboyejo a number of distinguished panelists. Participants will include Permanent Representatives to the United Nations and representatives of civil society, academia, as well as United Nations Agencies.
