STORYLINE:

Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir arrived today in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to witness the signing of a development contract for the rehabilitation of various sectors in the semi-autonomous region.
 
The multi-million dollar contract will go towards the construction of hydro-electricity dams, water supply dams and the maintenance of water storage facilities. The feasibility study for the dams is estimated to cost 40 million US dollars.

The signing will pave the way for three dams to be built in South Sudan, to aid much-needed development in the region after over two decades of war between the north and the south.

With the comprehensive peace agreement signed in 2005, the two parties agreed to share power and the county's wealth.

President Bashir last visited Juba in January 2007. His current visit to the region comes a month after the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) requested an arrest warrant for him on ten counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Sudan's western region of Darfur.

Speaking to the press in Juba, President Bashir said that the ICC is political and not lawful. He added that Sudan has its own upgraded and independent judiciary laws and said that no one is above the law in Sudan.

Salva Kiir Mayadrit, the leader of the Government of Southern Sudan, has said that the accusations by ICC Prosecutor against the Sudanese President would endanger the peace process and the affect democratic transition in the country.
