STORYLINE:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (5 March) reiterated his urgent call to bring an end to violence against women, a scourge whose impact is devastating and immeasurable, as the United Nations began a series of events to mark International Women's Day.

Attending a conference commemorating the Day, Ban Ki-moon pointed out that "worldwide one in five women suffer rape or attempted rape", and that in some countries "as many as one in three women are beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused". Ban stressed that "this is alarming and shocking. This must stop."

The Secretary-General also stressed that violence against women could not be tolerated, in any form, context, nor circumstances by any political leader or by any government.

Fijian lawyer and activist, Imrana Jalal, who serves as a human rights advisor to the United Nations Development Program and as a member of the Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team, told reporters at the United Nations that less than half of UN member countries had laws targeting violence against women despite the fact that it was a global issue and of enormous importance.

Jalal noted that the best examples of good legislation were emanating from the developing world. But she added that the challenge now was to get those governments to give sufficient resources to those good laws to make them effective.

Over the weekend, Ban Ki-moon visited the "Heal Africa Hospital" in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region where violent rape is rife. The hospital is an American care center that attends to victims of sexual violence. The Secretary-General, accompanied by his wife, talked to women victims of rape and those affected by HIV Aids.

Heal Africa hospital also specializes in training health professionals, strengthening social activities and providing physical, spiritual and social healing. Women are trained in sewing and making of hand-crafts for income generation once they fully recover and go back to their normal lives.
