STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Atul Khare visited villages today in North Kivu Province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where more than 240 civilians were raped by rebel forces last month.

Khare arrived at the UN mission’s Kibua base (MONUSCO) along with Special Representative for the mission Roger Meece. They traveled to Rubonga and then Luvungi, a town about 30 km away from the mission’s base, where civilians had been raped by Congolese Mai Mai militia and rebels from the FDLR (Rwandan Hutu Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda). Many of the women reported being gang-raped by groups of armed men in front of their families.

At a community center in Luvungi, he met with some of the victims, who explained to him what had happened and pleaded for help. Khare, dispatched by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, conveyed Ban’s message of outrage and sympathy, saying that the UN will do its best, “to help to restore maximum security in this area.”

Khare added that the international community needs to, “bring such criminals to justice.”

The Congolese Mai Mai and FDLR occupy and control many areas in the Kivus mainly around the mines. The Hutu rebels fled Rwanda after their involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
