STORYLINE:

A month ahead of the elections, Sudan’s National Election Commission (NEC) has started the transportation of millions of ballot papers to various states in the country.

It is expected that about 180 million ballot papers will be transported countrywide – both in the north and the south.

As politicians traveled around the country convincing would-be voters to vote in their favor, the NEC - charged with making sure that Sudan’s first multi-party election in 24 years is a success - is hard at work to make sure the elections happen smoothly

The first batch of ballot papers was airlifted to Sudan’s southern capital city Juba, on Friday (12 March) by the United Nations (UN) which is providing logistical support to the National Elections Commission.

Speaking at a warehouse before the departure of the first ballots, NEC member General Abdalla Balla Al-Hardallo said NEC had started the transportation of the ballot papers early because of the huge amount of ballot papers expected to be transported to many remote locations countrywide.

The NEC wants to get the required ballots to all polling centers ahead of the polling date.

“In a month’s time the people of whole Sudan, they will start the process of polling. This material you are seeing here in Khartoum, it will be flown sometime from now to the Headquarters of the Southern region Juba and from there they will be dispatched to the ten states in the southern region,” said General Abdalla Balla Al-Hardallo, one of the nine members of the NEC.

The NEC has established close to 15,000 polling centers countrywide.

The ballot papers are being printed in Sudan, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Other polling materials are expected to be transported similarly.

The first consignment of ballot papers, airlifted from Khartoum in securely fastened pallets, arrived in Juba and was received by a Southern Sudan Elections High Committee member Santrolino Ariki.

“It is good that these ballot papers have come and will be distributed to the states in order to prepare for the polling day. So we feel that things are going well and we hope that this elections will end well and on time,” said Santrolino Ariki.

The ballot papers are being guarded at every stage.
