“Fifteen years ago, delegates from 189 countries met in Beijing for the Fourth World Conference on Women. It was a call to action, a call to the global community to work for the laws, reforms and social changes necessary to ensure that women and girls everywhere finally had the opportunities they deserved to fulfil their own god given potentials and contribute fully to the progress and prosperity of their societies.”

We have to write the next chapter, to fully realize the dreams and potential that we set forth in Beijing.”

STORYLINE:

On the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed a meeting today (12 March) commemorating the event at the United Nations.

Clinton said that the Fourth World Conference on Women had been “a call to action” to the global community towards ensuring that "women and girls everywhere” had the opportunities to fulfil their potentials and “contribute fully to the progress and prosperity of their societies.”

She told the meeting that today “more girls are in school, more women hold jobs and serve in public office” and that as women’s opportunities have improved “their economic, political and social contributions have multiplied.”

The Secretary of State noted that in many countries, “laws that once permitted the unequal treatment of women have been replaced by laws that recognize their equality” but said that there is still “so much more to be done” to fully realize “the dreams and potential” set forth in Beijing.

Putting a twist on her own words fifteen years ago as then First Lady of the United States, Clinton said that “women’s progress is human progress and human progress is women’s progress.”

Adopted at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action remains the most comprehensive global policy framework to achieve the goals of gender equality, development and peace.

The Platform called for action on 12 key issues: poverty, education and training, health, violence against women, armed conflict, economy, power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms, human rights, media, environment, and girls.

Following the meeting, Clinton met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
