“What is a village without women, what is a society without women, what kind of development can we have if hundreds and thousands of women are raped and their lives are taken from them, although not everywhere killed, their lives are taken from them through rape and sexual violence.”

STORYLINE:

Margot Wallström, former Vice President of the European Commission, was sworn-in as the new UN Special Representative for Sexual Violence today (11 March).

Wallström was officially appointed to her new position last month and is a long-time advocate of the rights and needs of women throughout her political career, first as a Swedish Minister and later as Environment Commissioner and Vice-President of the European Commission.
 
After the swearing-in ceremony, at a meeting of the Commission on Status of Women, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that Wallström will be a "powerful and constructive voice" in addressing "this most grave human rights issue."

Wallström played a leadership role in raising awareness about the urgency to implement UN Security Council resolutions 1325 (2000) and 1820 (2008) – both created to strengthen political will to support women’s rights.

Speaking after Ban, Wallström said that hundreds and thousands of women continue to be victims of conflicts and “their lives are taken from them through rape and sexual violence.” 
 
The UN Fund for Women (UNIFEM) says that violence is a major cause of death and disability for women aged 15 to 44 years.

Wallström added that violence against women “is not only a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue” and needs to be taken up by both women and men.

Prior to her new appointment, Wallström was also co-founder of the European Union inter-institutional group of women and a key supporter of the 50-50 Campaign for Democracy by the European Women’s Lobby, where she worked to promote a more gender-balanced European Union.
