As you know, they represent a new, great concern for us because they are going back to places that even pre-earthquake were not equipped with any kind of resources to support them.”

“Sanitation, there the situation is truly critical. Only five percent of the requirements for latrines were covered so far. Unicef has launched an appeal to get new latrines in and find solutions in an over-congested city in order to get new latrines in public places.”

“The concern now, obviously, is the rainy season that is about to come. So, regarding shelter, we are now considering the setting up of some hazard-resistant or hurricane-proof types of shelter. This is obviously a better solution, a more costly one and probably it will take longer to bring them in here. We recall that the port facilities are not operating and basically this equipment is very heavy and they will need the port to be open to be able to bring them in.   Otherwise, bringing them in by planes would have enormous costs.”

“The prime minister of Haiti has requested that the countries that will receive children up for adoption confirm with the Haitian authorities that they are ready to receive them, that the paperwork and other processes are completed, and that the children are confirmed to be on the list for adoption.”

STORYLINE:

MINUSTAH (United Nations Mission in Haiti) Deputy Special Representative Kim Bolduc expressed concern today over Haiti's fast approaching rainy season and underlined the need for hazard resistant shelters throughout Port-au-Prince.

Speaking at a press conference at UN headquarters via video link from Haiti, she said that approximately 500,000 people had left Haiti’s capital, causing concern for their livelihood in the countryside where there are fewer resources.

Bolduc said that shelter and sanitation remain top priorities, but emphasized the need for more urgency, stating that “only five percent of the requirements for latrines were covered so far.”

She also underlined that around one million people are still homeless and that hazard-resistant shelters are required with the rainy season fast approaching and the upcoming hurricane season.

Regarding logistics, Bolduc said that Port-au-Prince’s port facilities are still not operating and that continued relief efforts may have ‘enormous costs.’

Questioned on Haiti’s current child adoption policies, she said the Prime Minister of Haiti had launched direct appeals to countries interested in receiving adopted children and that all children should be checked against the names on the list for adoption.
