 “The children are the future of the country, so it’s very important that the children be educated. Only about half the children in Haiti before the earthquake were in school, this is a travesty, one I think one of the big challenges is how to provide the opportunity for education for all children of Haiti. It is the young people who are the future, it is the young people who really should be involved in the rebuilding of this country so that it can be a country they will be proud to live in in the future.”

STORYLINE:

Haitian children play in the aftermath of a terrible tragedy. Flying kites in a camp for people displaced by the magnitude 7 earthquake, they’re able to forget for a while, the horrors of their collapsed city, Port au Prince.

But UNICEF and partners have been working around the clock to get assistance to the quake stricken country and to the people most in need, those living in camps and orphaned and vulnerable children.

UNICEF executive Director Ann Veneman visited Port au Prince to witness firsthand the devastation, the needs of those affected and the efforts to assist them. She visited a makeshift shelter in downtown Port-au-Prince where UNICEF and partners are working together delivering food, clean water and basic health services.

“I think the real challenge here is how do you get help to the people in need because the destruction is all over this huge city. And I think that all of the people on the ground that are delivering humanitarian aid are doing the very best that they can. The quake has taken a massive toll on Haiti’s children, destroying schools and orphanages in affected areas throughout the country. Thousands of children were either orphaned or separated from their families. Many are severely traumatized.

UNICEF is setting up safe centers where children can be registered, identified and eventually reunited with their families while receiving emotional support. They are also providing assistance to orphanages and childcare centers.

Veneman visited one such center, which, along with its school, was severely damaged by the quake.

And as clear up operations continue, Haitians are starting to look to that future, but they will need not only the optimism of, but also hope in their children if they are to rebuild their country, if they are to rebuild their lives.
