“So far we have confirmed 92 deceased, we still have seven unaccounted for and 30 injured. So this is the latest we have on UN personnel here in Port-au-Prince.”

“Yesterday we started with the distribution of rice. We reached one hundred thousand people in nine distribution centres and today we are increasing with three more points, totaling 12 distribution points, and tomorrow we’ll be increasing even more up to 19 distribution points.”

“Distribution yesterday and today went very, very well, very smoothly with no incidents what so ever. The population is acting very responsibly, very orderly. They line up, they receive these bags of rice. These bags of rice of course are quite big, its fifty kilos. So its two people coming and they divide that among themselves later on in two bags of 25 kilos each.”

“The main concern at this point is shelter, lack of tents and accommodation for displaced people mostly thinking about the rainy season. I think that we are facing a real challenge because although we are concerned about the rainy season that is coming soon, we have not yet been able to get the means necessary to prepare evacuation sites outside of Port-au-Prince and outside of areas affected by the earthquake. Right now people don’t have tents and are sleeping out in the open in those improvised camps still if it rains a lot we have to immediate locate safe areas; and prepare them somehow to get shelter for evacuation within three months time.”

STORYLINE:

The acting head of the United Nations Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) Edmond Mulet briefed reporters via video conference at headquarters in New York on the latest in Port-au-Prince.

He said that to date there were 92 UN deceased staff members confirmed, seven still unaccounted for and 30 injured.

Mulet said that on Sunday (31 Jan) they distributed rice to 100,000 people in nine distribution centres. He said they would be adding more distribution points.

Mulet said that the distribution of food on Sunday and today went,
very smoothly, “with no incidents what so ever.”
 
Kim Bolduc, the mission’s deputy special representative said that the main concern was shelter with the rainy season approaching.
