STORYLINE:

Continued fighting in Yemen has forced thousands of families to flee their homes in the country’s north to overcrowded camps for the displaced further south.

According to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, as fighting escalates in the north, camps for the displaced further south are becoming increasingly overcrowded and unable to deal with the mass exodus of people fleeing the conflict.

Just last month, UNHCR registered more than 68,000 people who had arrived from the northern Sa'ada governorate to the Hajja governorate. Many of the new arrivals were forced to flee more than once.

At Al Mazrak camp in the Haijja governorate, UNHCR estimates that about 20,000 people live in a settlement built to hold half that many. Families are doubling up, and sharing their tents to help accommodate the growing numbers.

UNHCR needs more land to accommodate the growing influx of people in these camps.

Another camp in Al Mazrak, which opened earlier this month, is almost full with 6,000 people. These camps are also trying to provide basic services such as education to the displaced children.

These schools provide displaced children with a stable atmosphere and allow them to study, play and escape the harsh conditions of camp life.
 
UNHCR is planning to build another camp in Al Mazark to cope with the growing number of people displaced by the conflict. The third camp is expected to hold another 500 families in the area.
