STORYLINE:

High in the hills of rural Yemen   villagers are busy building a road of stone.

While some of the men haul the heavy rocks from nearby mountains; others chip and cut them into blocks, which are then held firmly into place with cement made from water and sand,

It’s an effort involving many, creating many jobs.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Saleh Qaeyd, Project Coordinator:

The road is part of Yemen’s program to counter the effects of rising food prices on the country’s poor, by implementing community-based works, such as the building of the road here  in the village of Hababa in the Yemeni Governorate of Taiz.

The labor-intensive works program is providing jobs for tens of thousands of Yemenis in eight of the country’s poorest governorates where unemployment is highest.

Ghaleb Ahmed, father of two, is on his midday break from the road project he works on for eight to nine hours a day.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ghaleb Ahmed, Villager:

The labor  program, supported with a grant from the World Bank’s Global Food Crisis Response program-encourages women participation.

Samra Naji and other village women earn money carrying water and food to the workers building the road.

The labor program is implemented by the country’s Social Fund for Development. The regions covered are based on indicators from Yemen’s poverty map.

Other works being implemented under the workfare program include agriculture terraces, flood protection walls and water cisterns.
