STORYLINE:

The United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) Executive Director, Thoraya Ahmed Obaid today received the the Louis B. Sohn Human Rights Award presented by the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) in Washington D.C.

Obaid’s selection for this year’s award, according to UNA-NCA, "is an appropriate way to highlight her human rights achievements and her deep commitment to the belief that women's rights are human rights. Obaid has spoken out forcefully in all regions for an end to discrimination and violence against women and girls and for respect for their full human rights, including the right to sexual and reproductive health and has been successful in engaging new partners worldwide in the quest for women's empowerment and gender equality.”

“I accepted on behalf of my colleagues of UNFPA who work every day with deep commitment to advance the health and rights of women, men and young people,” said Obaid.

Obaid also said that from Africa to Asia and the Pacific, from Latin America and the Caribbean to Arab states, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia “we are guided in our work by a simple yet powerful principle: All human beings are born free and equal, in dignity and rights. And these rights form the foundation for freedom, justice and peace in this world.”

The award was presented to Obaid by the UNA-NCA President, Karen Mulhauser, during a ceremony held on Capitol Hill. The event was organized in partnership with The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights and the D.C. Commission on Human Rights, which seeks to eradicate discrimination, increase equal opportunity, and protect human rights in Washington, D.C.
