“The effect of climate change on food security and this is obviously to do with the weather it’s to do with the extremes of weather, the unpredictability of the weather, the drought, the floods and so on. We already have one billion people in the world who go to bed without enough to eat, food insecured to use the jargon. It looks very likely, not least because of all sorts of other factors you are aware of as well as population growth and so on, changing eating habits, this is going to be a massive problem to deal with in the future and climate change is one of the factors which is going to make it more difficult.”

“Public health risks, is another area of concern. Some of the main deceases are highly sensitive to climate and temperature, Malaria, Dengue Fever and others can be expected to be spreading to new areas where they haven’t been seen before or haven’t been so prevalent before. Again we need to make sure we can cope with that, that we have the right infrastructure in place.”

“The particular parts of adaptation we are concerned about are for example disaster risk reduction, we cannot stop these extra disasters happening but we can make sure that the communities and the areas that are going to affects are better prepared to deal with them.”

STORYLINE:

The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator, John Holmes, briefed reporters today at the United Nations in advance of his trip to Copenhagen .

Holmes told journalists that the effects of climate change on food security had to do with the extremes of weather, “the unpredictability of the weather, the drought, the floods and so on”.

Holmes reminded reporters that already there were “one billion people in the world who go to bed without enough to eat, food.”

Holmes said that his other area of concern was public health. He said that some of the main diseases were highly sensitive to climate and temperature, such as malaria, dengue fever and others could be expected to be spreading to new areas where they have not been seen before or haven’t been so prevalent before.

He also said that he wanted to focus not just on mitigation but also on adaptation, and the particular part of adaptation was disaster risk reduction. Holmes said that those extra disasters cannot be stopped from happening but one can make sure that the communities and the areas that are going to be affected are better prepared to deal with them.
