STORYLINE:

Jalozai camp is the largest of the displacement camps in northwest Pakistan- 80,000 people live here. Most of the families don’t have the possibility to return to their villages before winter- so they will have to make do where they are.

Jahanazahda and his nine children have lived Jalozai since last year. Everything own is here in the camp.

“I would like to think life is going on well in the camp. It’s not the same life as I had before, the way we had to leave our house. We all had to leave our houses and we had to escape in the clothes we were wearing and we left all our belongings at home. Life is not the same here but I am thankful it’s going on well.”

To help families weather the coming sub-zero temperatures, UNHCR is handing out kits to help the displaced to winterize their tents.  About 85,000 people will receive blankets, sleeping mats and plastic sheets to further insulate their makshift homes.  Replacement of old tents is also underway.  So far, 3,000 all weather tents have been distributed in Jalozai camp.

There are ten camps in the region -  but it’s estimated that tens of thousands of displaced families are living with friends and relatives so it’s difficult to ascertain exactly how many people have been displaced because of the conflict.  A second round of winter assistance will begin in the coming weeks.  It will include firewood, woolen shawls and solar powered lamps.
