“Today I am launching a dedicated Network of Men Leaders. This Network will consist of men – young and old – who have pledged to work to end violence against women and girls. These men will add their voices to the growing global chorus for action. Each has pledged to take concrete steps in his community of influence and create partnerships with women to end this violence. As I launch this Network, I call on men and boys everywhere to join us. Break the silence. When you witness violence against women and girls, do not sit back. Act. Advocate.”

“You are a weak man if you use your physical superiority to assault and brutalize women. A society that permits violence against women is a society that is on the way out. “Up to 70 percent of women, at some point in their lifetime experience physical or sexual violence by men, the majority from their husbands, intimate partners or someone they know. This means men have a crucial role to play in ending such violence, as fathers, friends, decision makers, and community and opinion leaders. Just as women's rights are human rights, women's issues are people's issues.”

“While there maybe no, “one size fits all” solutions, I strongly believe that prevention can be as effective as a cure. If not better it is still encouraging that men leaders have resolve to confront gender base violence heads on, particularly through fostering the culture of tolerance and respect for women. I believe that involving men leader is the right direction to go.”

“We may not be able to change the violence of power between men and women in Arab society over night. However, that doesn’t mean that we cannot change violent and abusive behavior towards women and girls. While there are many men and boys in the Arab world who are opposed to violence against women and girls it’s absolutely crucial that more and more are brought into this equation.”

STORYLINE:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked the 10th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women today by launching a Network of Men Leaders, a major new initiative bringing together current and former politicians, activists, religious and community figures to combat the global pandemic. 
“These men will add their voices to the growing global chorus for action,” he said, noting that 70 percent of women experience in their lifetime some form of physical or sexual violence from men, the majority from husbands, intimate partners or someone they know. 
“As I launch this Network, I call on men and boys everywhere to join us. Break the silence. When you witness violence against women and girls, do not sit back. Act. Advocate. Unite to change the practices and attitudes that incite, perpetrate and condone this violence. Violence against women and girls will not be eradicated until all of us – men and boys – refuse to tolerate it.” 
Each member of the Network, part of the “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” campaign that Ban launched last year, will work to support the longstanding efforts of women and civil society organizations worldwide to end violence, undertaking actions from raising public awareness to advocating for adequate laws. 
Desmond Tutu who wasn’t able to be present at the event said through a video message that a society that permitted violence against women was a society that was on the way out. He also invited the South African and the members of the global community in the run up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to join him in efforts to end violence against women.

Later at a press conference, Ban said that men had a crucial role to play in ending violence against women, as fathers, friends, decision makers, and community and opinion leaders. He added that just as women's rights were human rights, women's issues were people's issues.

Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand said that it was encouraging that men leaders had resolve to confront gender base violence heads on, particularly through fostering the culture of tolerance and respect for women.

Guida Anani from the Lebanese Non Governmental Organization CAFA (Enough) said that they might not be able to change Arab society over night, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t change violent and abusive behavior towards women and girls. She said that while there were many men and boys in the Arab world who were opposed to violence against women and girls it was crucial that more and more were brought into that equation.
