STORYLINE:

United Nations Secretary-General today (6 November) briefed the Security Council on his recent trip to Afghanistan, and the situation in that country.

Following his briefing Ban Ki-moon met reporters outside the Council and said that he had just returned from Afghanistan where he had gone to show his solidarity with the ‘brave’ UN staff working there. He said he was proud to say that he had been able to see for himself that the determination and commitment of the staff in Afghanistan remained strong.

Ban noted that the UN was taking “immediate steps to strengthen security” for all UN staff in Afghanistan, including the short-term relocation of some international staff. He said that most of them would go to safer sites within Afghanistan, some, approximately 200 would be relocate to other duty stations in the region, but he stressed that, “it's not 600 as has been reported by some media”.

Ban went on to say that the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was not moving any international staff in the provinces out of the country, “I know that some people have inaccurately characterized this as a withdrawal. But let me be crystal clear: we are not evacuating”.

Ban pointed out that the mission would have to manage with less administrative support, “as I told the Security Council members, the situation in Afghanistan remains dangerous. We cannot afford to procrastinate.”

Earlier this week, Ban made an unannounced visit to Kabul, where five UN staff members were killed and nine others injured in an attack on a guest house on 28 October, for which the Taliban have claimed responsibility.

While in Kabul, Ban met with the head of UNAMA, Kai Eide, as well as the heads of UN agencies working in the country and security officials.

He also had what he described as “good” meetings with President Hamid Karzai as well as with Abdullah Abdullah, who had announced last weekend his withdrawing from the presidential run-off that was scheduled for 7 November.
