“The most difficult part was when we had shot five hundred hours of film, to make a two-hour movie out of that, to deal with all this enormous archive we had and to construct a story that would be the history of earth.”

“I think we’re missing some courageous politic now. And my work is to convince public opinion that we have to change, and everything is going together, and frankly is why we have done this movie with no copyright, everybody can use it, every country, why I came here to show the movie, to say to the delegates, okay, use the movie in your country, show it, go to the schools, you can do DVD for school and everything. I think today I’m not so much disappointed, because I think it’s already a big thing to see all these people meeting and talking about climate change.”

STORYLINE:

As the last round of talks before the Copenhagen conference on climate change wrapped up this week in Barcelona, French photographer and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand was at the United Nations in New York for a special screening of his documentary ‘Home’, which aims to raise awareness of Earth’s fragility in the face of climate change.

In an interview with UNifeed, Arthus-Bertrand said his film was intended as a “humble” contribution towards getting people to support limits on the impact of human activities.

“Home” was launched as a not-for-profit film on this year’s World Environment Day on 5 June 2009. Narrated in English by Glenn Close, it takes viewers on a visual journey composed entirely of landscapes captured from above.

The film showcases the diversity of life on Earth and makes visible the marks left by humankind, which Arthus-Bertrand says are threatening the ecological balance of the planet.

Arthus-Bertrand was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) earlier this year.

He became famous as a photographer for a unique way of capturing stunning landscapes - flying miles above the earth in a hot air balloon. His 2000 exhibition "Earth from Above" traveled from Paris to cities around the world, reaching over 130 million visitors.

“Home”, produced by Europacorp and Elzevir Films with support from the PPR Group, is his first feature film for the big screen. The 15-million dollar production shot in dozens of countries around the globe, mostly from helicopters, was quite a challenge he said.

Asked whether he was disappointed with recent developments ahead of the Copenhagen conference, where UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged nations to ‘seal a deal’ to limit greenhouse gas emissions, Arthus-Bertrand said the first step was to get the broad public on board for action.

Home has been seen by more than 150 million people so far, according to the filmmaker’s foundation Good Planet. The UN screening was organized for some 400 UN staff, ambassadors and other delegates, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and other guests.
