“The United Against Malaria campaign is a campaign from NGOs, from foundations, the United Nations and private sector. And all together we want to use football as a vector to communicate on Malaria. 2010 in Africa will be the year of football with the Africa Cup of Nations and with – of course – the World Cup in the second part of the year. Thanks to the support of FIFA and all our partners, we will use football to communicate in the villages and everywhere in Africa and use football as a vector of communication on Malaria.”

“Malaria kills more or less one million people a year. That’s a child dying from malaria every thirty seconds in Africa, three-thousand a day. And today we have everything to prevent and to cure the disease; so we have no excuse anymore, the United Nations with foundations and NGOs, to fight malaria together. At the end of 2010, the Roll Back Malaria partnership and the United Nations Secretary –General have fixed some very specific targets.”

“I think in Africa it is the number one cause of mortality, particularly for children, so this really is a very serious scourge that we shouldn’t take lightly, and it’s true that today in the African context I think it’s the first thing we should tackle.”

“First we need to ensure good information for populations on the ground here in Africa, and after people are well informed we need sufficient aid on an international level to be able to provide mosquito nets in particular, which I think is really the most effective protection we have against the disease today.”

And it’s also very important for us to associate ourselves with the football World Cup image, because all these young people in Africa will of course take enormous pleasure in following this World Cup and knowing that it is organized on their continent.”

STORYLINE:

High-profile figures from the world of sport, politics, non-governmental organizations, global health, and business are coming together in support of the United Against Malaria campaign across Africa joining forces ahead of the historic hosting of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

“The United Against Malaria campaign is a campaign from NGOs, from foundations, the United Nations and private sector. And all together we want to use football as a vector to communicate on Malaria. 2010 in Africa will be the year of football with the Africa Cup of Nations and with – of course – the World Cup in the second part of the year. The objective is to turn the tide on a disease that kills an African child every thirty seconds by the next World Cup in 2014.

The campaign aims to change people’s behaviour by encouraging families to sleep under nets and take other steps to beat the disease. It also aims to drive concrete action from African corporate and political leaders to tackle malaria in the run up to the World Cup in South Africa.

2010 represents a key milestone in the fight against malaria given the timeline set down by Millennium Development Goals. In order to reach the stated aim of ending malaria deaths by 2015 all African countries have committed to nationwide coverage with nets and treatments by the end of 2010.

Malian football stars Seydou Keita and Frédéric Kanouté are two of the players involved in the campaign.

Football has a huge influence across the continent and the partnership between football associations, health professionals, and corporate partners offers a number of opportunities to reach people and change their habits when it comes to preventing malaria.

All money raised from the campaign will be channelled through the Global Fund for malaria prevention in Africa. The Global Fund is the world’s largest financier of programmes to fight malaria with US$4.6 billion committed in more than 70 countries.
