STORYLINE:

Umed Faizullo shows off his title to 11 hectares of farm land in the Ferghana Valley. He and his family grow apricots, beets and cotton on their land, land that, for the first time in generations, they own outright.

SOUNDBITE (Tajik) Umed Faizullo, farmer:

The government of Tajikistan, with help from the World Bank, is helping provide water to these potentially fertile fields, fields that were neglected for decades.

These men are reinforcing a breakwater for the reservoir. The hope is that a steady trickle of water from here to the farms will boost harvests, create jobs, and raise living standards.

The farmers doing the backbreaking work in the fields, most of them women, say they are doing it for their children.

But so many children help their parents’ farm, that school attendance is a problem. If harvests grow more abundant, the hope is that families will be able to get their children out of the fields and into the classroom.
