“We face a phenomenally complex challenge, including a negotiating process with many actors and interests. But the overall choice should be clear to all. It is a choice between sustainable growth and economic turmoil, a choice between inclusive global markets and trade anarchy, a choice between a healthy planet and environmental catastrophe. Failure is not an option.  There is no Plan B. We must seal the deal in Copenhagen.”

"The new Prime Minister of Japan and the president of China both put pretty impressive commitments on the table, and pretty concrete commitments; twenty five percent cuts in Japan, and a commitment to a serious effort in carbon intensity, as well as other things, renewables in China. And we didn’t see that kind of concreteness from president Obama. So I don’t think there is any question that he recognizes the seriousness of this problem and the need for global action, and I don’t think there is any question of his commitment to engaging that global action. But we didn’t see today that kind of concreteness about how the united States will in fact step up to collaboration with other countries around the world in that solution."

STORYLINE:

World leaders gathered today (22 September) at the United Nations for the largest ever summit on climate change, took part in a flurry of activities this afternoon.

The day-long event with more than 100 heads of State and government in attendance included a UN Leadership Forum Luncheon - addressed by former US Vice-President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Al Gore – which marked the first time that global political leaders, as well as top business and civil society officials, meet on such a large scale at the UN.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told leaders that the world faces “a phenomenally complex challenge” and that tough choices will have to be made as “there is no Plan B”.

Gore spoke of the “necessity of stepping up” to the challenges presented, and compared the business opportunities offered by a “shift to a low carbon economy” to those offered by the advent of the internet.

At a press conference later in the day, the Director General of the World Wildlife Fund International, Jim Leape compared the specific proposals offered by the new Prime Minister of Japan and the president of China to the lack of “concreteness” in US President Obama’s statement.

At the closing of the Summit, Secretary-Gebneral Ban Ki-moon said that the world must "unite in common cause and leave a legacy of hope and healing”.

Today’s summit took place just under 80 days before the start of the Copenhagen conference, where nations are aiming to wrap up negotiations on an ambitious new agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions that would go into effect in 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol’s first commitment period expires.
