STORYLINE:

Speaking today in Geneva, Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, Director of the Initiative for Vaccine Research of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that all countries including low income countries would need to have access to the H1N1 vaccine.

She also said that the WHO expects the first doses of the vaccine to become available by early fall in the northern hemisphere.

Although the severity of the pandemic is currently considered to be moderate with most patients experiencing uncomplicated, self-limited illness, some groups such as pregnant women and people with asthma and other chronic conditions like obesity appear to be at increased risk for severe disease and death from infection.

A Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization said that the spread of the pandemic virus was considered unstoppable, and emphasized that the vaccine would be needed in all countries.
