 “My children are traumatized by the shelling of our neighbourhood and now we have to live under trees. This is the first time that we received this kind of assistance. Until today, we hardly received anything significant. We have nothing, all people are fleeing, and we have no water, we lack shelter and health services. God only knows the situation we live in.”

STORYLINE:

An increasing number of families have been forced out of their homes in Mogadishu- the capital city of Somalia as a result of the intense fighting that erupted in May this year.

People are fleeing with as little as a sleeping mat and the clothes they are wearing. Food and water are in short supply. The continuous shelling and open combat impedes on the urgent humanitarian assistance needed.  Ragged tents and makeshift shelters are sprawling along the roads to the capital city.

Over 200,000 residents of Mogadishu, making are now displaced, which makes it the biggest exodus from the capital since the Ethiopian intervention in 2007.

SOUNDBITE (Somali) Shino Ali- 45 year-old mother:

UNICEF and its partners are working together to distribute emergency non-food supplies for over six thousand households displaced in and around Mogadishu. The supply includes plastic sheets, blankets, collapsible jerry cans, soaps and mosquito nets.

Here at the displaced persons camp of Daynile district, on the outskirts of Mogadishu, 3,000 households were registered and received distribution cards. They will need these cards to receive supplies from warehouses run by the Danish Refugee Council.

Many people are also seeking refuge beyond the outskirts of Mogadishu -where UNICEF and its partners are sustaining their efforts to provide safe drinking water and sanitation services, as well as nutritional services for the treatment and prevention of severe malnutrition.
