“There are significant changes, I have worked here 28 years, and even when I was five and six and would come, the factory was already old.  But after renovations, the environment has completely changed, it’s brighter and warmer.”

STORYLINE:

This clothing factory resembles others in Bulgaria, except for one thing. Most of the people working here are hearing impaired.

Being able to work just like anyone else is important, says seamstress Dimitria Atanasova, with the help of a sign language interpreter.

The factory in the Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora is one of the country’s biggest, and one of 13 which employ Bulgaria’s most vulnerable, in this case, Bulgarians who are deaf.

Bulgaria recently renovated the factory as a part of the country’s Social Investment and Employment Promotion Project.  The project – supported with a World Bank loan – aims at raising living standards of its most vulnerable citizens.

Under the project, the clothing factory got new windows, new floors, and new bathrooms.

Maria Kavardjikova is the factory’s sign language interpreter,  She’s been coming here since childhood, when both her deaf parents worked at the factory:  The renovations have made a big difference, she says.

Atanavska Ilcheva has worked at the factory for 23 years, sewing employee uniforms for various Bulgarian companies.

She says the renovations mean a more comfortable factory!
