STORYLINE:

Hollywood actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Danny Glover came to Tanzania to support this year’s Zanzibar International Film Festival.

He also used this opportunity to highlight the impact of HIV, particularly prevention of mother to child transmission, as well as stigma and discrimination against children and their families affected by the virus.

At this antenatal clinic in Dar Es Salaam, Mr. Glover sat down with expecting mother Rose and her husband Hassan, who was here for his HIV test. Throughout the entire clinic, Rose was the only woman seen with a partner by her side.

The clinic offers HIV testing, counseling and treatment to ensure mothers give birth to healthy babies free of HIV. To encourage men’s participation in that process, many clinics like this give couples priority, attending them first. But the number of men accompanying their partners is still very low.

To learn the extent of discrimination and stigma associated with HIV, Mr. Glover met the adolescents of the Zanzibar Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS. With support from UNICEF and the Film Festival, the young people put together this newsletter, using their personal testimonials to draw attention to this problem.

Six of them living with HIV, or with infected family members, participated in a photo project that exemplified the rejection and isolation they had endured.

During his meetings with the President of Zanzibar and the First Lady, Mr. Glover highlighted the need to pay more attention to children and families affected by HIV.

Drawing upon his personal experiences, Mr. Glover engaged a candid dialogue with a group of young people who have come together to tackle socio-economic problems faced by many youth.
