“Airplanes would come and drop bombs. There were mortar shells hitting our house. We children would cry.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Mr. Lajwar, owner of sugar mill:
“These people arrived in a terrible state with absolutely nothing. I emptied my sugar mill for them as there was no room left in my house. We are poor people and do not have enough resources. We are sharing whatever food and clothes we have with them. These people urgently need assistance like health facilities, education food clothes.”

STORYLINE:

Children displaced by fighting in Pakistan have harrowing memories of the violence they have witnessed.

SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Ajmal, eight years old:
 “Airplanes would come and drop bombs. There were mortar shells hitting our house. We children would cry.  On the way it was very difficult and we could not walk especially the little children and we had to carry them on out backs.”
 
Of the millions of people forced to leave their homes by the fighting, many are relying on the kindness of strangers.

SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Mr. Lajwar, owner of sugar mill:
 “These people arrived in a terrible state with absolutely nothing. I emptied my sugar mill for them as there was no room left in my house. We are poor people and do not have enough resources. This sugar mill housing six families who’ve escaped the fighting in Swat.

UNICEF is providing basic services for the displaced but because so many like these are staying private homes it’s difficult for humanitarian aid to reach them.
