STORYLINE:

Former President Bill Clinton wrapped up a three-day visit to Haiti today. It was his first official visit to the troubled Caribbean nation since being appointed UN Special Envoy in May.

In the flood-ravaged city of Gonaives, Clinton visited major public works to dredge the Laquinte river – the main source of flooding. Gonaives is still struggling to remove thousands of tons of mud from last year’s hurricanes. A spokesman for Clinton says better coordination of international and government disaster management is needed.

Haitian President Rene Preval accompanied Clinton through the streets of Gonaives.

Preval and Clinton attended a memorial ceremony honoring the victims of flooding in 2008 – which killed 800 people and caused nearly a billion dollars in damages. The Clinton visit may spur additional aid to Haiti, which won nearly $1.2 billion in debt relief from the World Bank and IMF. Clinton stressed the need to better manage the funds, to avoid disasters and sustain development.

Crowds gathered along the streets of the city, euphoric to catch a glimpse of Bill Clinton, screaming “I love you Bill” in Creole.

Clinton is remembered by for reinstating former president Jean Bertrand Aristide to Haiti in 1994. Aristide was later overthrown in 2004, but remains popular among the poor.

In Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, Clinton visited a factory that transforms garbage into recycled charcoal. This technology could help Haiti save its few remaining forests.

At a mango factory, Clinton spoke with industry leaders about the potential to expand export capacity. Currently, up to 80% of Haitians are formally unemployed. The UN Special Envoy says he hopes to help create between 150,000 to 200,000 new jobs in Haiti in the next year.

This visit marks the second time Clinton has visited Haiti this year. For many, it underscores his goal to refocus international attention on the country’s deep economic woes.
