France also is one of the major players in the Doha initiative and this is why they are here with us today.”

STORYLINE

Members from Sudan’s National Assembly on the 5th July 2009, briefed a French Parliamentarian Delegation on the security and stability situation in Darfur and in Southern Sudan.

The French Delegation arrived in Sudan on the 4th of July in response to an invitation by Sudanese Parliamentarian committee for foreign relations.

Sirg Jankan, member of External Relations of France and the head of the French Delegation acknowledged the invitation from the Sudanese and highlighted a growing concern in France with regards to the on-going problems in Darfur.

The Chair-person of Security and Defense Sub-Committee Dr. Mudawi El- Turabi noted the importance of this visit by the French Delegation and the vital interests that France shares with the neighboring Chad and Central African Republic.

During their six-day visit the French delegation is expected to visit Sudan’s western region of Darfur and hold talks with local authorities, the United Nations African Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and humanitarian organizations. The delegates will also visit internally displaced persons’ camps to inspect the situation on the ground.

The French Parliamentarian Delegation will also visit South Sudan on the 8th of July and hold talks with First Vice-President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of Southern Sudan Salva Kiir Myardit, the speaker of South Sudan Legislative Assembly and various humanitarian organizations. They will also open up a branch of the French Cultural Center in South Sudan’s capital town of Juba.
