“If I have the privilege of being elected as the new director general of the IAEA I will do my utmost to enhance the welfare of the human beings, ensure sustainable development through the peaceful use of  nuclear energy. Also as a national coming from Japan I will do my utmost to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. You know that to that, solidarity of all the member states countries from north, from south east and west is absolutely necessary.”

STORYLINE:

Japan’s Yukiya Amano was elected today to head the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA), succeeding Mohamed El Baradei, who will step down after serving three terms with the agency. 
Amano obtained the required two thirds majority from the IAEA’s governing board, with 23 votes and one abstention in the 35-nation meeting. 
Following the vote, Amano met journalists and said that he would do his “utmost to enhance the welfare of the human beings, ensure sustainable development through the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Also as a national coming from Japan I will do my utmost to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons”. But he added that to do that he will need the, “solidarity of all the member states countries from north, from south east and west is absolutely necessary.”
Tomorrow the Board will meet again and procedurally move to appoint Amano as the Director General. He will replace Mohamed El Baradei, who has been Director General since 1997 and whose current term expires this 30 November.
Ambassador Amano is the Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to International Organizations in Vienna, and Governor on the IAEA Board of Governors. 
He has extensive experience in disarmament, non-proliferation and nuclear energy policy and has been involved in the negotiation of major international instruments. 
He has held increasingly senior positions in the Japanese Foreign Ministry, notably as Director of the Science Division, Director of the Nuclear Energy Division and Deputy Director General for Arms Control and Scientific Affairs. 
During his term in office, Mohamed El Baradei, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for his work at the IAEA, has been criticized for his comments and accused of politicizing the agency.
